A hearbreaking love story with Kabul in the background, captured with an impressive handmade animation technique, based on the movements of real actors. In this meticulously crafted animated adaptation of the titular best-selling novel of Algerian writer Yasmina Khadra, hope finds a way to survive in a morbid environment. In Summer 1998, with Kabul under Taliban rule, Zunaira and Mohsen are young and in love. Despite the daily violence and misery, they hope for a better future. One day, a foolish gesture causes life to take an irrevocable turn.

The film was screened in the section ‘Un Certain Regard’ of Cannes Film Festival (2019). It was nominated for Best Animated Film, European Film Awards (2019).
