Haïkus urbains # Stairs performance by Melissa Ellberger
From the end of April to mid-June 2022, the House of Switzerland will be located in the Casa degli Artisti building, a leading Milanese artistic centre, just a few steps from Corso Garibaldi. Located in Brera, the famous design district of the Lombardy capital, the House of Switzerland is intended to serve as a place for meetings and exchanges between Switzerland and Italy and to bring together the economic, scientific, political and cultural players of the two countries in order to discuss common future perspectives.
On the occasion of the day dedicated to architecture, the Flux Laboratory will present on 26 May a performance choreographed by the artist Melissa Ellberger entitled Haïkus urbains # Stairs
Urban Haikus # Stairs is an interdisciplinary choreographic project presented as a video installation in relation to a live performance.
The video work consists of a collection of short films focusing on the intersection of human movement and urban architecture. The live performer creates a dialogue with the video while mixing elements of urban and contemporary dance on the stairs.
Staircases are common places that allow for vertical circulation, linking "up and down". They participate in the symbolism of evolution, elevation, descent and fall.
The term haiku refers to a short Japanese poetic form that celebrates the expression of sensations through a minimal aesthetic.
An abstract narrative unfolds between ordinary gestures and the virtuosity of movement. In an interplay of gravitational forces, the viewer is invited to view architecture and movement from surprising perspectives.
